UniFi Switch Aggregation Pro
Ubiquiti · aggregation switch, 1U · USW-Pro-Aggregation
what it is
An aggregation switch for a 19-inch rack, 1U high — a device into which you plug other switches, not computers. Steel chassis 442 × 325 × 44 mm, weight 4.6 kg, with a 1.3-inch touchscreen on the front panel.
All thirty-two ports are fiber and none delivers power. Twenty-eight are SFP+ 10 Gb/s transceiver slots, the remaining four SFP28 with a throughput of 25 Gb/s. There is not a single copper port here — nothing can be connected to this device with a regular network cable without a transceiver.
The internal throughput is 760 Gb/s, and the device operates at layer three, meaning it can route traffic between networks, not just switch it.
Cooling is active: there are four fans on the rear panel. This is equipment for a rack in a server room, not for a room with people. Next to the power socket there is a backup power input from the UniFi Power Backup module.
what we read from it
The state of each of the thirty-two ports separately — and since another switch usually sits on the other end of each of them, every one of them is a backbone port.
- Negotiated speed separately from what the port is capable of. A 10-gigabit transceiver in a 25-gigabit port is a normal situation and completely invisible if you look at only one of these numbers.
- Bad frame, discard and link-down counters on every port. In the network core a single faulty transceiver can disrupt traffic for an entire site, and the symptoms appear at the users, not here.
- Spanning tree changes on a port — in an aggregation device this is the first sign that a loop has formed somewhere or that a backup link has just taken over the traffic.
- The number of hardware addresses visible on a port — shows how large a part of the network sits behind a given link.
- Which device is visible on the other end of the cable on each port.
- Link quality rating issued by the device itself, separately for each port.
- Assignment of ports to VLANs.
port layout
The twenty-eight SFP+ slots are arranged in fourteen columns of two, in one compact block taking up half the width of the panel. Numbering runs down, then to the right: 1, 3, 5… on top and 2, 4, 6… on the bottom, up to 28.
The four SFP28 ports are set apart from that block by a visible gap and are arranged in two columns at the right edge: 29 and 31 on top, 30 and 32 on the bottom. The spacing between them is slightly larger than in the SFP+ block, so the separation is visible to the naked eye — which is convenient, because these are the only ports that may take a 25-gigabit transceiver.
The touchscreen is at the left edge, the reset hole at the right, low down. On the rear panel, from the left: backup power input, four evenly spaced fans, mains power socket and a latch locking the plug.
what we cannot read
- PoE — the device does not have it. This is a hardware limit.
- Transceiver condition — neither optical signal level nor module temperature. The link is visible, not the optics.
