UniFi Switch Pro 24 PoE
Ubiquiti · PoE access switch, 1U · USW-Pro-24-PoE
what it is
An access switch for a 19-inch rack, 1U high: twenty-four gigabit ports and two SFP+ 10 Gb/s transceiver slots. Steel chassis, 442 × 285 × 44 mm, weight 4.3 kg. A 1.3-inch touchscreen on the front panel.
All twenty-four ports deliver PoE — but not equally. The first sixteen give up to 30 W per port, the last eight up to 60 W. The total budget is 400 W with a 450 W power supply; the switch itself takes up to 50 W before anything is plugged in to draw power.
This is a device for a place where a single panel carries both small loads and devices that will not accept light power: a PTZ camera with a heater, an access point with four radios, a phone with a large display.
It has a backup power input (a DC socket on the rear panel, with its own switch) — meaning a mains power outage does not have to take down a whole floor. This distinguishes it from the smaller models of this family, which do not have such an input.
Watch the name — and this is more serious here than usual. The same family includes the USW-Pro-24, without the word "PoE". The vendor datasheets give for both devices identical dimensions, identical port layout and the same form factor — the only difference is that the other one has no PoE at all. The front panel looks the same.
what we read from it
The state of each of the twenty-six ports separately.
- Power drawn from each powered port, separately. With two power classes on one panel this is the only way to notice that a device requiring sixty watts was plugged into a port that gives thirty. The symptom of such a mistake looks like a device failure, not a lack of power.
- Total load on the 400 W budget. The sum of the maximums of all ports is 960 W, i.e. two and a half times more than the switch can deliver. The budget can be exceeded without exceeding any single port.
- Negotiated speed separately from what the port is capable of.
- Bad frame, discard and link-down counters on every port.
- Spanning tree changes — on an access switch, usually the first sign of a loop.
- Which device sits in which port, together with its hardware address.
- Assignment of ports to VLANs and the link quality rating issued by the device itself.
- CPU and memory load, uptime, availability and response latency.
port layout
The twenty-four copper ports are arranged in two rows of twelve, divided into two blocks of six columns. Numbering runs down, then to the right: 1, 3, 5… on top and 2, 4, 6… on the bottom.
The gap between the blocks falls between 12 and 13, and the power boundary between 16 and 17. These are not the same line: ports 1–16 give up to thirty watts, ports 17–24 up to sixty. The power division is recognized by the markings next to the numbers, not by the frame.
At the right edge there are two SFP+ 10 Gb/s transceiver slots side by side — ports 25 and 26. The touchscreen is at the left edge, the reset hole at the right. Each port has LED windows for speed and activity.
On the rear panel there are two inlets: the backup power socket with its own switch on the left and the mains power inlet on the right. There is no console port.
what to watch out for
- There is no cable test. In the UniFi Network 10.6.106 controller this function does not exist at all.
what we cannot read
- History of power draw over time — the current state is visible, not the trend.
- Whether backup power is connected and charged — that is a separate device, not a value read from the switch.
- Transceiver state — neither optical signal level nor module temperature.
transceivers tested in this device
Transceivers we checked in this device, and whether the device showed their optical diagnostics (temperature, power, alarm thresholds):
- Ubiquiti OM-SM-10G-D (10GBASE-LR), firmware
7.4.1.16850: diagnostics read (1 units). - Ubiquiti UF-SM-10G (10GBASE-LR), firmware
7.4.1.16850: diagnostics read (1 units). - Unbranded SFP+10G-CP-5M (10G SFP+ Direct Attach), firmware
7.4.1.16850: diagnostics not shown (1 units).
All transceivers and switches in one place, with filters: what each device shows.
