UniFi Switch Aggregation
Ubiquiti · aggregation switch, 1U · USW-Aggregation
what it is
An aggregation switch for a 19-inch rack, 1U high — a device into which you connect other switches, not computers. Steel enclosure, 442 × 120 × 43.7 mm, weighing 2.6 kg. On the front panel there is a 1.3-inch touchscreen. Internal switching capacity 160 Gb/s, power draw up to 36 W.
All eight ports are SFP+ 10 Gb/s transceiver slots. There is not a single copper one — nothing can be connected to this device with a regular network cable without a transceiver. It does not deliver PoE at all.
Cooling is passive — the manufacturer labels it directly on the drawing as "fanless". This is the main practical difference from the larger Pro model of the same family, which has four fans on the rear panel. This one can be placed in a rack in a room with people; that one belongs in a server room. The second difference is the lack of a redundant power input: a mains power outage shuts this device down, and with it the entire aggregation layer.
Watch the name. The same family includes the USW-Pro-Aggregation — thirty-two ports instead of eight, an enclosure two and a half times deeper and a different throughput class. The names differ by one word, and the enclosures are the same width.
what we read from it
The state of each of the eight ports separately — and since there is usually another switch on the other end of each one, every one of them is a backbone port.
- Negotiated speed, separately from what the port is capable of. A gigabit transceiver in a ten-gigabit port is a normal situation and completely invisible if you look only at one of these numbers.
- Counters of errored frames, discards and link drops on every port. At a convergence point a single faulty transceiver degrades the traffic of the whole site, and the symptoms appear at the users, not here.
- Spanning tree changes — in an aggregation device the first sign that a loop has formed or that a backup link has just taken over traffic.
- The number of MAC addresses seen on a port — shows how large a part of the network sits behind a given link.
- Which device is visible on the other end of the cable on each port.
- The link quality rating reported by the device itself, separately for each port.
port layout
The eight SFP+ cages sit in four columns of two, at the right edge of the panel. Numbering runs down, then right: 1, 3, 5, 7 above the top row and 2, 4, 6, 8 below the bottom one.
Between the rows, one per column, run LED strips with up and down arrows — each signals the state of the top and bottom port of its column. This device has no separate status LEDs; that role is played by these strips and the touchscreen itself.
The screen is at the left edge, the reset pinhole at the right, low down. The entire left half of the panel is empty — this device has eight ports across a width on which others fit forty-eight.
On the rear panel there is only the power inlet and ventilation slots. No fans, no console port, no redundant power input.
what we cannot read
- PoE — the device does not have it. This is a hardware limit.
- Internal temperature — the model has no sensor, so a missing value is not a reading failure. With passive cooling and eight 10G transceivers in a 1U enclosure, this is worth keeping in mind.
- The state of an individual SFP+ transceiver — neither optical signal level nor module temperature. The link is visible, the optics are not.
