what it is

A managed switch for a 19-inch rack, 1U high: sixteen gigabit ports and two SFP fiber transceiver slots. Chassis 443 × 221 × 43 mm, weight 2.8 kg, rack ears included.

Every one of the sixteen ports delivers PoE — this is the main difference from the newer USW-16-PoE, which powers only eight. Two standards are supported: PoE+ (802.3af/at) up to 34.2 W per port, and the older 24 V up to 17 W.

The power budget is 122 W, not 150 — the number in the model name describes the power supply. The vendor datasheet gives the consumption of the whole device in two variants, with port power (150 W) and without (28 W); the difference is what remains for connected equipment.

The device has two fans and is not silent — for a rack in a room with people, a newer model with passive cooling will be better.

what we read from it

The state of each of the eighteen ports separately, and for the sixteen copper ones also power draw and the power standard.

• Which power standard is active on a port. This model delivers both PoE+ and the older 24 V — a device plugged into a port set to the wrong standard will not come up, and the symptom looks like its own failure.
• PoE draw per port and the total for the device. Sixteen ports with a 122 W budget fill up faster than the port count suggests.
• Link-down counter and bad frame counter per port.
• Spanning tree changes.
• Which device sits in which port, together with its hardware address.
• Internal temperature — the general_temperature field in the list below.

The sixteen copper ports are arranged in two rows of eight. Numbering runs down, then to the right: 1, 3, 5… on top and 2, 4, 6… on the bottom.

The two SFP slots are stacked at the right edge: the upper one is port 17, the lower one 18. On the left side of the panel the square system LED with the vendor logo lights up.

On the rear panel, apart from the power socket, there is a separate serial console port — the vendor does not count it among the eighteen and it has no network address. It is useful when the switch has stopped responding over the network. Next to it are two fan grilles.

what to watch out for

• The fan level from the controller does not tell whether the fan is spinning. For the entire first generation of UniFi switches the controller reports level 0 regardless of temperature. Cooling is indicated by the internal temperature, not by this field.
• Temperature is compared within a model. The sensor measures the interior, while the vendor gives an ambient temperature limit. In one sample from October 2026, units in open racks had 52–57°C, and two in a closed rack 66–67°C — the difference comes from the environment, not the model.
• There is no cable test. In the UniFi Network 10.6.106 controller this function does not exist at all.
• SNMP responds, but will not give PoE draw. The standard PoE table is empty; per-port draw is provided only by the controller. An SNMP access password (community) longer than 20 characters is silently truncated by the switch, which then stops responding to the full one.

what we cannot read

• Fan speed — see above; there is internal temperature, not RPM.
• History of PoE draw over time — the device gives the current value.
• Anything through the console port — it is a service path, not a source of measurements.
