UniFi U6 Long-Range
Ubiquiti · ceiling access point, Wi-Fi 6 · U6-LR
what it is
An access point for ceiling or wall mounting, running Wi-Fi 6 on both bands simultaneously. The housing is a white polycarbonate disc 220 mm in diameter and 48 mm thick, on a stainless steel bracket. It weighs 800 g without the bracket — noticeably heavier and larger than access points of the previous generation, which matters when mounting in a ceiling tile.
The IP54 rating means protection against dust and resistance to water splashes from any direction. The similar-looking U6 Enterprise has no ingress protection rating in its datasheet.
There is a single connection: a gigabit port on the ceiling side, accepting PoE in the PoE+ standard, in the 44–57 V range. Power draw reaches 18.5 W, nearly three times as much as the Wi-Fi 5 access points of the same family — when planning the power budget on a switch, this is the difference that decides how many access points can be connected.
what we read from it
Almost everything this device reports concerns the air, not the cable.
- Channel utilization separately for 2.4 and 5 GHz, broken down into transmitted and received traffic. This is the number that reveals an overloaded radio cell before anyone calls.
- Client count separately in each band — an uneven split usually means that devices are not moving to the 5 GHz band, and it is worth checking why.
- Operating channel and transmit power in each band.
- Share of retransmitted frames — it rises when clients are at the edge of coverage or when someone nearby transmits on the same channel.
- Client signal quality: average and worst signal level, signal-to-noise ratio, and the lowest rate at which any of them connects.
- Link state to the switch together with the number of the port the access point is plugged into, the negotiated speed and a link-drop counter.
- Uptime, availability and response latency.
port layout
There is no port at all on the visible face — once mounted under the ceiling, only a smooth disc with a glowing ring in the center is visible. The ring is about 94 mm in outer diameter, so it takes up just under half the width of the device, and it is the only status indicator.
All connections are on the ceiling side, in a recess in the housing: the network port that accepts power and the factory reset button right next to it. The edge of the recess has a notch through which the cable is routed when the device is mounted flat.
The manufacturer shows the underside only at an angle, so the exact spacing of the connections in the recess is not known.
what we cannot read
- Temperature — UniFi access points do not report it in any field.
- A list of clients with names — aggregate statistics are visible, not a list of people.
- Spectrum outside its own operating channels. An access point reports what it hears on its own channel; a picture of the whole band requires a separate sensor.
