UniFi 6 In-Wall
Ubiquiti · in-wall access point, Wi-Fi 6 · U6-IW
what it is
An access point mounted in a wall box, in place of a regular outlet — a rectangular enclosure of 139.7 × 96 × 31.2 mm made of plastic and aluminum, weighing 460 g. It runs Wi-Fi 6 on both bands.
It has a built-in four-port switch: the manufacturer describes it as a hybrid device, and the controller sees it as both an access point and a switch at the same time. In practice it replaces the network outlet at a desk or in a hotel room: it provides Wi-Fi and four ports for wired equipment.
The direction of power is reversed compared with ceiling access points. Those only accept PoE. This one accepts it on the uplink port and passes it on through one of the access ports — so it sits along the power path, not at its end. The access point itself runs on standard PoE, but passing power on requires PoE+ at the input. Without it, the four ports work, they just do not supply power.
Its own consumption reaches 13 W, not counting what the device passes on.
what we read from it
This hardware gives the full set of radio data and the port table at once.
- Channel utilization separately for 2.4 and 5 GHz, broken down into transmit and receive.
- Number of clients separately on each band, operating channel and transmit power.
- Share of retransmitted frames — a measure of airtime conditions.
- Client signal quality: average and worst level, signal-to-noise ratio, lowest connection rate.
- Status of each of the five ports separately — four access ports and the uplink. You can see which ones have equipment plugged in, at what speed it connected and how many frames it dropped.
- Whether the powering port has power enabled — the controller reports this separately from whether the hardware can supply it at all. A port capable of supplying power can have that function disabled in the settings.
- Which device is visible on the other side of each port.
port layout
There is not a single port on the visible face — once mounted, you see a smooth rectangle with a narrow light bar at the top (status indicator, 11.5 mm wide, exactly on the enclosure axis) and a gray manufacturer logo in the middle.
The ports are on the other two faces, both hidden after mounting:
- Bottom edge — four access ports in a single row, centered, with a reset button below them. The first from the left is the one that supplies power — the manufacturer labels it "PoE OUT", and the controller calls it "PoE Out + Data". The other three are regular.
- Back face — one uplink port, centered, going into the wall box. This is where the device gets power and the link.
The manufacturer does not show the bottom edge head-on, so the exact spacing of these ports is not known.
what we cannot read
- Temperature — UniFi access points do not report it in any field.
- How much power the powering port supplies — the device reports that power is enabled, but does not report watts.
- Spectrum outside its own operating channels.
- A client list with names — you see aggregate statistics, not a list of people.
