HP Laser MFP 137fnw
HP · laser multifunction printer, desktop · HP Laser MFP 137fnw
what it is
A multifunction printer to place on a desk: 406 × 359.6 × 308.7 mm, 8.58 kg, black-and-white laser printing, a flatbed scanner with a document feeder, a copier and a fax. A 10/100 network port and Wi-Fi.
The datasheet gives two sets of dimensions and they differ by 64 mm in depth: the device folded is 359.6 mm deep, and with the trays unfolded 424 mm. When planning desk space, the second one is what counts.
This is a rebranded Samsung printer (firmware base: Xpress M2070F) — HP took over Samsung's printer division in 2017. The web panel is Samsung SyncThru, and the vendor data sits in Samsung's SNMP branch, not HP's.
what we read from it
Over SNMP, without any configuration — the printer responds out of the box:
- Printer status and error mask: low paper, no paper, low toner, no toner, cover open, jam, offline mode, service requested.
- The literal display content — both lines of 16 characters each, e.g. "Ready to Copy".
- Six consumables as percentages: toner, transfer roller, fuser, paper pickup roller, document feeder roller and pad. The toner description includes the cartridge serial number, so a cartridge replacement is visible without a visit to the printer.
- Printed page counter and the number of power-ons.
- Versions of all firmware components — main, print engine, emulation and network module, each separately.
- Wi-Fi settings as seen by the printer itself: network name, channel, frequency and the access point it is connected to.
- Memory usage (128 MiB) and uptime.
port layout
The vendor does not publish a technical drawing of this model, so an outline with true proportions is shown. The construction is typical for this class: at the top a flatbed scanner with a feeder, below it a black control panel strip with a two-line display and a numeric keypad for fax, lower down a white body with a 150-sheet paper drawer and an output tray. At the back: network port, USB port, telephone line port and power socket.
what to watch out for
- The SNMP identifier pretends to be an HP JetDirect card, but the HP branch is almost empty. Everything interesting sits in the Samsung branch.
- The system description gives the series name, not the model ("HP Laser MFP 131 133 135-138"). The exact model is returned by the printer name from the standard printer table.
- The interface table lies about the link. A printer working over Wi-Fi reports a wired 10 Mb/s port in half duplex there. Link type and speed must not be taken from it; the traffic counters, however, are real.
- In deep sleep a printer on Wi-Fi drops its network connection, and its web server stops responding. It cannot be woken remotely — not through the web page, not through SNMP, not by a job sent to the print port. The system does not restart in the process: uptime keeps growing.
- Firmware packages for the series are not interchangeable. For the 137fnw the correct package is "4in1" (printer with fax); a package with a higher version number may be intended for other models of the series. An update cannot be rolled back.
- The RAM description gives 128 GB instead of 128 MB — a unit error in the firmware. The memory resource table is reliable.
what we cannot read
- Paper level — the tray only reports that paper is present, not how much. Only the error mask reports that paper is out.
- Alert list — the standard alert table does not exist; there are only alert counters.
- Temperature.
- 64-bit traffic counters — under heavy traffic the 32-bit counters wrap around.
- Content of printouts or scanned documents.

A full parameter list for this model is not here yet — the ones described above are those we have read and verified. A missing list does not mean the device exposes nothing more.
